AI visibility and search engine optimization are often presented as competing choices: stop doing SEO and start doing GEO, AEO, LLM optimization, or whatever new label is being sold this month. That is the wrong decision for most small businesses.
The honest answer is less dramatic. AI recommendations and traditional search results are different surfaces with different observations. But they often depend on the same public website, business facts, crawl access, local profiles, useful content, and outside reputation.
The simplest distinction
SEO is the work of making useful public content accessible, understandable, and competitive in search results. It includes technical access, page structure, content, internal links, local business signals, authority, and the experience after a person clicks.
AI visibility describes whether an AI-generated answer can find, accurately represent, cite, mention, or recommend a business for a relevant question. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) are common labels for work intended to improve that visibility.
Neither term guarantees an outcome. OpenAI says there is no way to guarantee top placement in ChatGPT Search. Google says even a page that meets its requirements and best practices is not guaranteed to be crawled, indexed, or served.
| Question | Traditional SEO | AI visibility |
|---|---|---|
| What you observe | Search impressions, positions, result features, clicks, and conversions. | Generated answers, mentions, descriptions, citations, recommendations, and omissions. |
| Unit of testing | A query, page, location, device, or result set. | A complete prompt and answer from a named provider at a recorded time. |
| Typical customer path | The customer scans results and may click one or more pages. | The customer may receive a synthesized answer before deciding whether to open a source. |
| Stability | Positions vary, but established search reporting supports repeatable trend analysis. | Answers can vary materially with wording, model, sources, location, settings, and time. |
| What you control | Your site, profiles, technical access, content, and promotion—not the ranking. | The same public inputs and test quality—not the generated answer or selection. |
| Useful outcome | Qualified discovery, visits, calls, leads, sales, and customer understanding. | Accurate inclusion in relevant answers that contributes to those same business outcomes. |
What is genuinely different about AI answers
The answer is synthesized
A search result usually presents multiple choices. An AI assistant can combine information into a new response, compare options, and explain why a business might fit. The customer may see fewer named choices and may not open every source used.
Prompts carry more context
A customer can describe a complicated need in one message: service, location, budget, timing, constraints, and follow-up questions. Google says its AI features may use a “query fan-out” approach that issues multiple related searches across subtopics and sources. That creates more possible paths between the prompt and the final answer.
The evidence is the complete answer
A single position number cannot describe whether a business was recommended cautiously, mentioned only as an example, cited as a source, or described incorrectly. Responsible AI-visibility measurement preserves the full prompt, response, sources, provider, date, and relevant location context.
Provider differences matter
ChatGPT, Google AI features, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and other tools do not all use the same models, retrieval systems, indexes, or presentation. A business may appear in one and not another. A small test should not be reported as universal AI visibility.
What still matters from SEO
Crawlable, indexable public pages
A system cannot reliably use a page it cannot access. OpenAI tells site owners not to block OAI-SearchBot if they want content included in ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, pages must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.
Robots rules, noindex, CDN blocks, broken pages, canonical errors, and important content hidden behind scripts or logins remain practical concerns.
Clear, useful content
A service page still needs to help a person understand what the business does, who it serves, where it operates, what the process involves, and what to do next. The same clarity gives search and answer systems better material to retrieve and summarize.
Google’s guidance for AI features tells site owners to keep important content in text, make pages findable through internal links, provide a good page experience, and focus on helpful, reliable, people-first content. That is recognizable SEO work, not a separate magic layer.
Accurate local information
Local businesses still need a complete Google Business Profile and consistent public information. Google says its local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence. AI cannot make an irrelevant service or distant location become the right customer match.
Credible outside evidence
Links, articles, associations, directories, reviews, and other third-party sources can help establish that a business exists and support what it claims. The goal is not to manufacture mentions for a crawler. It is to build real-world evidence that is useful wherever customers investigate the business.
Structured data that matches the page
Useful schema can label facts already visible to readers. Google says there is no special schema required for its AI features, and its structured-data rules require markup to represent visible page content accurately. Adding LocalBusiness markup cannot rescue a vague service page or make a false claim trustworthy.
Where old SEO habits need adjustment
Not every familiar tactic deserves to survive unchanged. Thin location pages, repetitive keyword variants, copied definitions, and content written mainly to occupy result space are poor customer experiences. They are not made more useful by renaming them “GEO content.”
AI discovery puts more pressure on a business to provide:
- specific answers to the real questions customers ask before choosing;
- clear relationships between services, locations, people, and qualifications;
- firsthand detail that a generic summary cannot replace;
- claims supported by visible evidence; and
- information maintained as the business changes.
Those are improvements to content quality and entity clarity. They should help a human visitor even if no AI assistant ever reads the page.
How to allocate a small-business budget
Do not divide the work into an “SEO budget” and an “AI budget” before you understand the actual gaps. Start with shared foundations.
- Fix access and accuracy. Make important pages crawlable and public facts correct.
- Improve service clarity. Build the pages customers need to understand fit, location, proof, and next steps.
- Maintain local profiles. Keep categories, hours, address or service area, phone, and website current.
- Build legitimate reputation. Earn reviews, referrals, local coverage, associations, and useful links through real work.
- Measure both surfaces. Use Search Console, analytics, calls, leads, and conversions alongside a small set of recorded AI-answer checks.
A good test for every “AI optimization” task
Would this change still help a customer understand, trust, or choose the business if AI recommendations disappeared tomorrow? If the answer is no, ask for stronger evidence before paying for it.
Measure the two surfaces differently
Use search tools for search questions: indexing, queries, impressions, clicks, landing pages, local profile activity, and conversions. Use recorded scans for AI-answer questions: the exact prompt, whether the business appeared, how it was described, which sources were shown, and whether the answer was accurate.
Then connect both to business outcomes. Neither a higher search position nor an AI mention pays the bills by itself.
